eric pankey's blues
by michael friedman

i've heard there's a way to live, without this pride & fear

i've heard that to get there, you taste the salt of many tears

i've heard there's a way to touch, without this flesh and bone

i've heard that to get there, you lift the weight of many stones

only thing you ever learn, is you can't know enough

ain't nobody ever really gives their secrets up

too much whiskey these days, that's better left unsaid

read the poems of your teachers, get on back to bed

they say that for love some will give cherries, or cash in unmarked bills

they say that for love some will dig a hole not even love can fill

they say loves knows no justice, they say love's a lucky streak

they say love will only come to those who never seek

when they say life is all desire, they say it with sure design

i'm no watchmaker, but i have told some time

they'll say everything is meaningless, they'll say everything's a sign

best to shut up & tell your stories, & get on down the line <
